[0:00] This morning, we are in Psalm 56, Psalm 56, and it's 13 verses, and I want you to read those if you would stand with me. Let's read those together. I know you just got comfortable. But see, it's no big deal. I was raised in the Catholic Church, and if you know anything about that, He's up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, and then up again, down again. Bells and whistles and smoke and flares. So this ain't nothing. To say, do all things as unto the Lord, right? Including the unreasonable requests. Okay, I'm going to read Psalm 56. 6, Be merciful to me, O God, for man would swallow me up. Fighting all day, he oppresses me. My enemies would hound me all day, for there are many who fight against me, O Most High.

[1:06] Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, I will praise his word. In God, I have put my trust. I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?

[1:17] All day, they twist my words. all their thoughts are against me for evil they gather together they hide they mark my steps when they lie in wait for my life shall they escape my iniquity and anger cast down the peoples oh god you number my wanderings put my tears into your bottle are they not in your book when I cry out to you then my enemies will turn back this I know because God is for me and God I will praise his word in the Lord I will praise his his word in God I have put my trust I will not be afraid what can man do to me vows made to you are binding upon me oh God I will render praises to you for you have delivered my soul from death have you not kept my feet from falling that i may walk before god in the light of the living lord thank you once again for your word and we ask that you bless this time now that we spend in it in Jesus name amen amen as as i was reading that right now i was thinking that trump should memorize this you know and then he should put it into practice and call upon the lord amen.

[2:39] But I'm so glad that I know this. Now, the key thought for this message, the key thought for this message is there in verse 9. This I know. This I know. The title of the message, the waves of life. This I know. I can trust God. You know, how many of us, we turn to the Psalms regularly, regularly if not daily to hear from the lord how many of us do that one of you yeah good that's.

[3:18] Counting me too, i know you guys just don't like raising your hands because you might think there might be some kind of commitment involved you know if you raise your if you if you raise your hand but But I'm so glad, you know, because the Psalms are there for us. They cover all of life and living. They address all of life's challenges. And it's wonderful. They are an expression of men of faith, expressing themselves.

[3:52] Expressing their experiences and their emotion and their reactions to life, communicating their whole heart their thought their intentions their doubts their fears their triumphs their faith all laid out there for you these men of faith they're being real they're being open before god and they're being open before us and that's typical of through Through Scripture, we have that for us. Men of faith, their lives laid out before us. Nothing hidden. Men should never be put up on a pedestal. We learn that from Scripture, no matter who they are. Never put up on a pedestal. That's something we should all know. It's important to know because man will let you down. They will fail. They will sin. and that that's a constant in man's life and and i know for me personally i'm comforted so often i find myself saying hey reading the psalm hey that's me, and i connect that's how i think i'm okay then.

[5:11] As the scriptures minister to me, I'm normal. That's what I think so often. I'm comforted. You know, I'm just a normal sinner. What a relief. And I'm comforted by the scriptures. A normal man of faith and fears and hope and et cetera. That's just life. These are men of faith and their lives are put out there before us. And I thank God I'm normal. Well, God's word affords that. And you know what? We can't afford to be without it. God's word affords that. To say, I know this. I know this very well. I'm comforted because I know this. And this psalm is a prayer to relief from tormentors. Praying. David is praying. You know, in my Bible, the heading is to relief from tormentors. Prayer for relief from tormentors. And how many of us can relate to praying more intently when a pressure situation is upon us? It would be good to always be consistent in prayer, yet it's typical that difficult, pressing, scary situations will prompt intense prayer.

[6:39] So then, should we conclude good things for difficult times? Good things for those things that get us to pray? Good thing for the trials that get us to rely upon God? To be thinking about Him rather than just coasting? To remember, hey, we're a fast pace to the finish line. This is a race. And Paul says, I want to finish well. And so that should be our heading. That should be our pace, our bearing. And so, but probably, although we know this, none of us would want to admit that it's better that we go through difficult things, that we pray more. I'd rather kind of not. I'd rather just rather pray without having to go through things like that to prompt me to pray.

[7:29] And so what happens is God takes care of all that. He's the great administrator of our lives. He knows, he knows, hey, you're kind of just sort of, you know, buying time. I think that's sort of wasting time when the Bible says, redeem the time because the days are evil and you're sort of just out there. You know, that's not good. And so God takes care of all that. And David, in David's life, you know, he allows what's necessary. We see it in David's life. and and David remember most of us know his account as a very young man he had learned to trust the lord in difficult situations remember the the account of him being a shepherd boy and watching over the sheep and then you have the sheep being attacked by a bear and he sleuth slays the bear you know that was before 30 odd sixes and stuff you know.

[8:30] How would you like to face a bear with a sling or a knife? But he supernaturally protected the sheep and then a lion, and he would slay the lion. And then you might say that, you know, things got more intently and he graduated up, stepped up to that battlefield where he faced Goliath.

[8:52] And in facing Goliath, he applied principle. Wait a minute God delivered the bear God delivered the lion God's going to deliver this giant Philistine as well and he just applied principle he didn't have to go read well let me read the story of David and Goliath to see how this turns out like we can he didn't have that, you know he didn't have to you know go through that he just applied principles from things that he had already gone through and the same way that we would want to do that and so this particular psalm was written when David he was fleeing from king Saul. David was a warrior, but in this battle is he's annoying going to be anointed king he was anointed king but he hadn't taken that place yet and Saul pursued him to kill him and so David fled over to the enemy's side.

[9:58] Because that's kind of a safe zone that Saul couldn't get to him because he knew he would not touch God's anointed. And so that was a fight that he wasn't used to. That was a fight that was unfamiliar to him. It's like, wait a minute, how do you fight this fight? I can't touch God's anointed. He's the very one that's trying to kill me. So he's waiting on God to remedy that. And you know, like it is for us, this happens so often. and things are out of control. We have to wait on the Lord to move and to work. And I think of the fact that the battle that we're in is not our battle to fight. It's God's battle.

[10:42] And I was reading in 2 Chronicles 25, where it says in verse 7, but a man of God came to him. This is Amaziah, king of Judah, who basically was doing right in the sight of the Lord. And so the man of God came and said, O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the Lord is not with Israel, not with any of the children of Ephraim. And so remember the children of Israel, separate from the children of Judah, had already been, became idol worshipers. And so Amaziah, you know, he wanted them to help him in the coming battle. But he said, but the man of God says, if you go, be gone, be strong in battle. Even so, God shall make you fall before the enemy, for God has power to help and to overthrow. And so he's saying to him, basically, your next move is very important, says the prophet. What you do next is very important. So then Amaziah said to the man of God, but what shall we do? Do about the hundred talents which I have given to the troops of Israel. And the man of God answered, the Lord is able to give you much more than this. And so he said, he challenged him, what about the money?

[12:02] And basically, the man of God said, don't worry about the money. Do what's right. And so if Amaziah would have been following the Lord's counsel, he wouldn't have ended up giving all that money to Israel as it happened. So Amaziah discharged the troops that had come to him from Ephraim to go back home. Therefore, their anger was greatly aroused against Judah, and they returned home in a great anger. You know, again, when you step up to obey and please the Lord, Lord, often people get angry at you. But Amaziah strengthened himself, leading the people. He went to the Valley of Salt and killed 10,000 of the people of Seir, his enemies. So God gave him victory because he followed the Lord's counsel. The battle is not ours. Ours is to obey the Lord. He's the one that brings deliverance. It tells us in Proverbs 21, 31, the horse is prepared for the day of battle but deliverance is from the lord so we trust the lord for deliverance yes be diligent to be battle ready you know the horse is prepared for battle yeah get your tanks get your tanks built you know get your your fighter jets ready get all your armament.

[13:17] Ready but after everything's said and done it's the lord who brings deliverance and this is what we have to apply principle in our lives spiritually and so we have we find ourselves here in this psalm David with all his knowledge and experience at a very young age is expressing himself here as he as human emotions go yes he has all this experience but you know what, he's a human being and his emotions are being expressed.

[13:57] And so when we are caught in troubled waters, we respond as people, as men and women of faith who have emotions. You can't detach yourself from the emotional being that you are and how we think and how we respond initially. Things as often needs to be adjusted you know we hopefully we adjust from fear to faith and not the other way around from faith to fear but we go through adjustments and and as we look to the promises of the Lord and I remember when I was in high school which next year will be our 50th.

[14:50] Reunion coming up the last one i attended i think was number five so i already had a call from somebody from high school are you gonna come this is our 50th and i'm going okay well how many of us are left you know but anyway i remember when we were in high school my friends and i we started driving and we'd end up oftentimes at Newport beach and there we would body surf you know know what body surfing is it's great you don't need a special rack for your truck to get to get there you just need to get there and and and we would body surf and and I was I would just have a blast but this is the interesting thing about Newport Beach the waves would get really big at Norton Newport Beach and what they would do is they would come really close to the shoreline before they would break so in other words less water underneath you so that when you're body surfing it would drop you right down into the it had a lot of gravel and sometimes more gravel than sand kind of a shore and i just loved it but it was scary because sometimes you'd be like on an 8 10 foot wave and then it would just bury you into the gravel and then the water that would come behind you would just start to mix you up with the gravel and the sand, and that was fun.

[16:18] That was fun. It was scary and fun. But sometimes there would be a wave that would hit so hard and there was so much water, and it would hold you down. You'd think, like, this is it. You know, this is the wave that's going to get me. This is the one that's not going to let me up. This is the one i'm going to run out of air on and then in but in the back of my mind i think no wait a minute that's never happened this is going to let me up i'm going to be okay i've done this before i know this and then there would be this sense of peace and then you and it was too powerful to struggle it was too powerful you couldn't do anything but you'd be better off just like a rag doll you know you just sort of just go with it until finally it releases you and then you go up A prayer.

[17:06] And we used to do that over and over and over again. And it's kind of like also getting caught in a riptide. You ever been caught in a riptide?

[17:16] Riptides are scary because you can't get back to shore. And I was a strong swimmer being raised in Southern California, always in the water, always in pools. And the first time I got caught in a riptide, I was trying my hardest to get to shore, and everybody was drifting further and further away from me as I'm trying to go this way. But as I'm trying to go this way, not only are they going further from me, but they're disappearing off there. And what I learned afterwards was that when you're caught in a riptide, you just go with it. You just paddle, paddle, paddle until you feel yourself released and then you swim to the shore. But I didn't. I'm trying, I'm trying. It's a good thing I was a strong swimmer because I got exhausted exhausted, before finally I got kicked out of it, and then I learned later what you do, and I, many times after that, I'd be, oh, I, I know this, I know how this goes, this is good knowledge, it's terrible knowledge when you don't know it, it's good knowledge when you do, just kick back, wait, oh wow, this is really a big riptide, man, that shore is really far away, and then you get in pretty soon, oh man, now I'm to walk a quarter mile down the beach to get back to where those people I'm with. But I know this, I got this. Oh, there it goes. No struggle.

[18:38] No struggle. Like that, the waves of life. Things come in waves so often and sets. You know, some hold you down longer than others. Or like a riptide pulling you away from your comfort zone. Pulling you away. That place of familiarity that leads itself to faith. You know, it's easy, isn't it, to have faith in your comfort zone. To have faith in the places that are familiar what happens when you're getting ripped away from those places like that those places that lend themselves to faith to places that challenge your faith and those unfamiliar places that can undermine your faith pull you away draw you away unless you know better unless you know better because when you know better i've been there before god's got this no problem it's tough yeah i know but i've been there so that's why this is the key thought to this.

[19:44] So again what's going on here the mind and the heart of David he's in a threatening situation among his enemies they found him out and now he started acting like a madman to try and get out of this terrible situation he was in. He started drooling down his beard and scratching it, you know, just acting like a madman. They ended up releasing him. It worked. But he was in this threatening situation. He was the one that killed their champion, Goliath. Matter of fact, he even had the sword with him. Very scary situation, but bulletproof until he's out of there, swordproof or whatever. And in the situation, it seems no way out. Now what, Lord? So he writes, be merciful to me. Be gracious. Have pity on me. This is dumb. I shouldn't be here right now. Lord, have mercy. I've done it again. I'm in this situation again. Lord, I call upon you, have mercy on me. I can't believe it's again. Again, I've done this. So David knew who to turn to, and he had blown it. He ended up in the enemy's camp.

[20:58] And he was looking to hide. He was looking to hide among men, to use man as a shield rather than the Lord. And it's interesting because knowing who to call upon is key, and it stems from understanding that you have God's mercy and God's grace. The Apostle Paul, he wrote in 2 Corinthians 4, verse 1, Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy.

[21:39] We do not lose heart. The apostle Paul in a very difficult ministry that he had he says we do not lose heart why because we have received mercy so he's riding that wave of mercy although he says later on that chapter we are hard pressed on every side yet not crushed we are perplexed but not in despair persecuted but not forsaken struck down but not destroyed always carrying about in the in the body the dying of the lord Jesus that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body trouble all around but you know what we've received the mercy of the lord so we do not lose heart and And he goes on in that same chapter to say, he repeats again, therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day for our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceedingly and eternal weight of glory. I know this. This is what Paul's saying. We've received the mercy.

[22:59] While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. So knowing that, Paul did not lose heart. And that's why we don't lose heart, because we know that. We know we receive the grace of God. Do you know because of God's grace, if you sin, you can be forgiven? If it wasn't for God's grace, you couldn't be forgiven if you sinned. But you know you've received the grace of God. Now, you don't use that grace card to sin. Paul says, no, God forbid that you would, although you have the grace card because when you sin, God's going to forgive you. Why? Because he told you so.

[23:47] But that should be more reason not to sin. But as much as you would not want to sin, you're going to sin. Good thing for God's grace. It's good to know that because the devil wants to condemn you and he wants to take you out but when you know this he can't because god's got that so David be merciful to me oh god for man would swallow me up man can be brutal man can also be a blessing and depending on who you're hanging out with it could be brutal or it could be a blessing how many people have brought on horrible things in their life because who they choose to continue to hang out with.

[24:34] So it continues bringing them down to bad places, you know, hanging around with people that are going to swallow me up. And, you know, what a hassle things are in the flesh. But can I say, in the flesh is lifelong, this life. Yeah, it's going to be a hassle. But isn't it good to know it? Isn't it good to know it? You know, to be up to speed on these things, fighting all day, he oppresses me my enemies would hound me all day for there are many who fight against me oh most high that's not an exaggeration you know many reject Jesus who will also reject you when you stand for truth they oppress me it means to squeeze to apply pressure you know the extreme example of that might be that submersible.

[25:34] You know vehicle that remember last year went down to take a look at the tight the titanic was a titan the titan went down to look at the titanic and then imploded and and and they say that imploded the implosion would have taken taken would have been so quick that the human mind could not even calculate what had happened. And so they were just alive, and then they were dead.

[26:09] That's pressure. But can I mention to you something that what happens to a believer, when you're alive and then you're dead? As quickly, you're in the presence of the Lord. It's good to know that because sometimes pressures are so great in this life. They are. And so that could be an extreme example of the oppression. Depression but he goes on to say he says whenever i am afraid so in other words when it happens.

[26:43] Remember David was a proven warrior yet things were out of his control and the same with many great men of faiths told to us in the scripture they're suddenly they're warriors they're standing strong they're going against you know the enemy and then all of a sudden they have moments of weakness and fear set in and it's given to us in scripture oh wait a minute you can be a man or a woman of faith and suddenly be fearful yeah well you will you know none of us are above such things but he says i will trust in you and faith breaks that pattern, i'm fearful but i will trust in you and so he gets past that emotion of fear he trusts the lord in god i will praise his word in god i have put my trust i will not fear what can flesh do to me, well in this life plenty.

[27:52] You know, the rumors, the threats, the bodily harm, the lies, and so forth. For most of us, it's unfounded fear that never materializes, that are only in our imagination, but that's enough to make anyone fearful. The guy that's chasing me, but nobody's there. You know, the financial pressures that are going to consume me because of whatever reasons that never happen. The fact that god says i will provide for you i will take care of you but we get fearful because we look at the economy or we look at you know these things in the world and we get fearful but meanwhile god takes care of us and remember this that right here you have the subject the temporal versus the eternal.

[28:49] Because Jesus said in Matthew 10, verse 28, he says, and do not fear those who can kill the body or this temporal threat against his physical body, but cannot kill the soul, but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. All and so there is having the right perspective you know trusting in the lord trusting in our him with eternity and so yeah what can man do man can't take that away if god before you who could be against you nobody if if god's word his promises are for you who can take that away but meanwhile our own fear and lack of faith give it away and it's just not true we need to know this.

[29:40] And so all day they twist my words and all their thoughts are against me for evil so their intentions are to destroy me but fortunately without god's permission all their thoughts and plans never are acted upon because they're not allowed to act upon them god doesn't allow them to act the thoughts are all there the plans they want to take you out but they can't if God allows that it's for a purpose, otherwise they can't it's just threats they gather together they hide they mark my steps when they lie in wait for my life and so stealth the enemy is there and.

[30:24] Proverbs 23, 7 says, For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.

[30:29] Eat and drink, he says to you, but his heart is not with you. And so God knows they're around, they're stealth. They don't really care about you. They say what you want to hear. They do what you think they want you to do. And meanwhile, they're against you. You know, they hide. They mark my steps. So enemy in the camp, and I heard accounts where those that I heard about were in Vietnam, in the camps that we would have. And there would be, let's say, like a spy who would pace off, like where places were in the camp. And by pacing them off then he can give the information to those who could send him mortars in to hit the exact places in the camp where the soldiers would be and I mean the camp they pace it off they walk it they try and set you up and, and that's a real thing they scheme they lie in wait to set you up shall they Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger, cast down the peoples, O God. So there's a righteous zeal. You know, I pray without apology.

[31:54] I pray against the enemy. Lord, take them out. Take them out.

[32:01] And, you know, and some, they spiritualize that, you know. Lord, save them before you take them out. Well I mean I think that goes without saying I'm just saying Lord take them out before they kill another innocent child before they do some other heinous crime Lord take them out get rid of the evil element.

[32:23] And I say in Jesus name without apology and you know I'm not talking about personal attacks against me I'm talking about you know when I see gee, heinous things go on. We see it everywhere, and I won't even have to mention it. I don't have to mention that stuff to you, do I? You know. You know. You have your own list of things. And so, you know, once again, the heart is being expressed from a godly man who's under pressure, right?

[32:58] And you number my wanderings. We're pilgrims. We're traveling through in this life. And we have in the process, we accumulate experiences.

[33:09] And so we apply, you know, the accumulated experience and knowledge. Knowledge by experience often helps us because we know. Yeah, maybe we had to learn it the hard way, but we do know. We know now. Yeah, good thing. Knowledge by experience, the episodes, the escapades of life. The Lord knows very well. He keeps a count of all those things. And for us, we should be looking at those wanderings as window of opportunities in our service to the Lord. You put my tears into your bottle. Are they not in your book? and so nothing goes unnoticed nothing goes ignored by the lord he takes care in everything that we go through everything that hurts us all our tears you know he just keeps total record total accounting never needs auditing you know so so often we we audit the lord by not trusting him wait a minute i said that i will take care of you but this happened or that happened so let me audit you lord let me audit your promises i'm not sure that they're all 100 percent.

[34:32] You know, so we put the Lord on audit. And so when I cry out to you, then my enemies will turn back. So it's not until we seek the Lord, reminds me of the very simple principle that we often ignore, because we have a better idea. We have a logical plan. And that is to simply seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you seek first why is that difficult for us well because we're sinners because we have our own ideas they get in the way and sometimes because we have to learn by lessons of hard knock it's just the way it is then my enemies will turn back and so So it can be necessary to prompt us to cry out. You notice, I cry out to you, then my enemies turn back. So why did he cry out? Because the enemy was there.

[35:34] Because he was in this situation. Because it was difficult. Because he's between a rock and a hard spot. By his own fault, he didn't trust the Lord. That's how he got there. Then I will cry out. Then my enemies are going to be gone. And so the Lord knows God's concerned with our relationship God's concerned with our destiny that's foremost and more important than our comfort.

[36:02] And this I know there it is this I know because God is for me God has promised to take care of me and if God be for me who can be against me the answer to that is nobody, Nobody, nobody, nobody can undo what God has done for me. And in God, I will praise his word. And here we have worship and the word are hinged. And we understand really by studying the word, we're in worshiping the Lord. As we fellowship, we worship the Lord. When you're in service, you're worshiping the Lord. And so, and when we praise, we worship the Lord. In all our life, we have opportunities like that. I know for Wednesday, for a long time, we didn't have worship. Now we have worship in a sense, but we would read a psalm before we got started Wednesday night. That was our time of worship. The psalms are singing praise to the Lord. Although I would just read it, I wouldn't try and sing, because I'd ruin the moment.

[37:09] But, and then he goes on to say, In the Lord I will praise his word. In God I have put my trust. I will not be afraid. You know, in Hebrews 11.1, it says, Now, faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Now, we say, well, what can man do to me? Well, when we're in the place of trusting in the Lord, sometimes things are not always apparent. Sometimes things are not visible. at times things may even seem contrary to the will of god but faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen lord i don't know how you're gonna i can't see how you're gonna work this out but i trust in you i don't need you to show me your whole plan but i know that your whole plan has got my best interest in mind because you said so i know this so despite my emotion of fear, despite my emotion, my lack of faith and trust in your promises at this moment, I still know this. So Lord, forgive me.

[38:29] It also tells us in Romans 10, 17, so then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. And so faith stems from God's word. And so we trust in the promises written to us, given to us, they're backed by the Lord. And so vows made to you are binding upon me, O God, I will render praise to you. So that's speaking of integrity, that's integrity-based. so we make verbal promises to God, and then that's going to be backed by our actions or our commitment. What I have learned about that, and like New Year's resolutions, don't do that.

[39:12] If I make a New Year's resolution on January 1st, guaranteed by the end of the week, I've broken it. You know, so I've just learned to say, Lord, help me every single day to trust in your promises and to do your will. And then the next day you do the same thing. But for you have delivered my soul from death, you have not kept my feet from falling. No, sorry. Sorry, reverse that. Have you not kept my feet from falling that I may walk before God in the light of the living? And so my life my destiny belongs to the Lord thank you Lord because I know this thank you Lord because you've made that promise to me personally every single one of you God's made if you're a believer today God's made that promise to you and so despite you God made that promise despite you even when you break your promises God doesn't it's amazing he's so faithful God does it. Why? Because you know what? He has covered you with his grace.

[40:28] You're ready for heaven. As a bunch of sinners, we're all ready for heaven because of the work of Jesus Christ. And he says that I may walk before God in the light of the living. And so while yet in the enemy's camp. And so while we're on planet earth we're in the enemy's camp this is a place where the god of this world is the devil and while we're here we can walk in the light while we're here and so we're called to be soldiers act like one, You know, it's a sad thing when you hear accounts of soldiers that they run in battle. They leave their group with one less, which makes it a little bit harder, may cost the lives. There's some that will flee the country, go to like Canada or whatever, for fear of the war.

[41:41] And you know you can't do that and be right in the lord we're called to fight the good fight of faith, and we're in the battle and there's nowhere you can run and there's nowhere you can hide when you look at the battle armament it's all for the frontal protect the front it's not for or turning and running, but facing the enemy. Beware, Christians, to desire bliss, because it's contrary to our calling. It's unassociated with the battle that we're called to fight in. Yes, enjoy rest when rest is given to you, but never lose the mindset of a soldier. We're not in here for four years or 10 years or 30 years. This is a lifelong commitment and a lifelong battle until we're in heaven. Amen. Let's stand together.

[42:56] And if you need prayer, come forward, okay? Okay, guys will be right here to pray with you. If you need prayer, don't leave without praying. It's important. Prayer is important. God answers prayer. God waits for us to pray. Sometimes, oh, no, I got this. Or, oh, there's more important things for people to come up here and pray for. Well, that's just not wise. Lord, I pray for all those that are here. Just ask for your blessing, Lord, upon them. And if they're struggling in an area, I just ask, Lord, that you would just once again minister to them, make known to them your faithfulness, your forbearance. Lord, to your gentleness, your gentle nature. A bruised reed you would not break, smoking flask you would not quench. Lord, you're so gentle.
