[0:00] So, we are going to be in 1 Thessalonians chapter 2, and so open your Bibles and stand with me as I read from 1 Thessalonians chapter 2, I'm going to begin there at verse 18 and read down to chapter 3 verse 5.
[0:24] So therefore we wanted to come to you even I Paul time and again but satan hindered us for what is our hope or joy or crown of rejoicing is it not even you in the presence of our lord Jesus Christ that is coming for you are our glory and joy therefore when we could no longer endure it we thought it good to be left in Athens alone and sent Timothy our brother and minister of God and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ to establish you and encourage you concerning Concerning your faith, that no one should be shaken by these afflictions.
For you yourselves know that we are appointed to this.
For in fact, we told you before when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation just as it happened.
And you know, for this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you and our labor might be in vain.
[1:38] Lord, just thank you for the heart of your word that comes through and we can learn so much to apply in our own lives.
So just bless this time, we pray in Jesus' name, amen. You can all be seated, you can all be seated.
So it's human nature to wanna be comfortable, right?
I don't think anybody would argue that. And of course, there's nothing wrong with that.
As a matter of fact, that is a normal and healthy way to want to live.
Absolutely. If our house is cold, then we turn up the heat.
[2:21] If it's hot, we open up windows, we put on fans, and if you're fortunate enough, you turn on the air conditioner.
We like to be comfortable, for sure. These days, technology has a lot to do with that.
You know, a carpenter is going to use a power saw, not a handsaw.
And when we travel, we usually go by car and not by horse.
Or walk. We should walk more. but we don't. And this is all good and right and smart and necessary.
No questions about it.
[3:00] But here's the quandary. Technology has not altered in any way the spiritual realm.
And what I mean by that is an example.
Carpenters' power tools have radically changed carpentry.
The jet airplane has radically changed travel, but technology has not added or enabled a Christian to love God more or to live sacrificially.
In other words, a computer wouldn't have helped the Apostle Paul get closer to Christ.
Nothing to do with that. If anything, technology has only aided and abetted Christians to be comfortable to an unhealthy degree.
[3:57] Does modern living have to interfere?
No, not at all. It doesn't have to. Often it does, but it doesn't have to.
[4:10] What has always determined spiritual wellness is a love for God and a love for others.
Jesus said, responding to the religious leaders of that day, they're always trying to entrap him.
Jesus said in Matthew 22 or it says in Matthew 22 starting with verse 36 teacher, one of the lawyers.
[4:31] Asked him, which is a great commandment in the law and Jesus said to him you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul with all your mind this is the first and great commandment and the second is like it you shall love your neighbor as yourself on these two commandments hang all of the law and the prophets Jesus responded and he also gave us a new commandment he said in john 13 34 and 35 a new commandment i give to you that you love one another as i have loved you that you also love one another by this all will know that you are my disciples if you have love one for another other and so all the technology in the world cannot make that any better cannot increase a genuine love for god or for others although technology can aid in a bed a Christian to be comfortable to an unhealthy degree it's because human nature.
[5:44] Human nature that leans that way anyway, and taking the road of least resistance that's our nature that's the human nature and that's not Calvary Road, Calvary Road is anything but that so there's a constant tug-of-war.
[6:09] And like hitting the snooze button of life and rolling over to sleep just a little longer, That's what happens. You know, the Apostle Paul, he says it's high time to awake.
In Romans 13, he tells us there, verse 11, Paul writes, And do this, knowing the time that now it is high time to awake out of sleep.
For now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.
The night is far spent. The day is at hand. And therefore, let us cast off the works of darkness and let us put on the armor of light.
Let us walk properly as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy.
[7:03] But put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts.
And so, we don't want to hit the life's snooze button.
We've got to be careful about that. sleep a little bit longer and really that mentality and that physical response spills over into spirituality so you know if you happen to have that tendency it does spill over into our spirituality and you know Jesus said regarding serving him and this is the example The example he gave is in Mark 10, starting with verse 42.
But Jesus called them to himself and said to them, you know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them.
And they're a great one exercise authority over them.
So in other words, in the world they dictate and they have entitlement attitude and so forth.
Yet it shall not be so among you but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant and whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all.
[8:22] There's a difference there you know does it say to be a lazy servant absolutely not matter of fact just the opposite and of course.
[8:34] We're really to be a sterling example of servanthood. The Apostle Paul, when he writes in Romans 12, 1 and 2, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service, and do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you might prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
That part of the transforming would include the mindset that we have and our attitude concerning spiritual work ethic.
It all has to do with that.
You know, oftentimes, you know, you come across somebody that has a good work ethic.
And when you do, it's so refreshing.
It's so refreshing. rushing and you know you just want to you know you almost you just so and I remember you know in old school there was more you're more apt to run into that type person but things are changing, things are changing but it should it change in our lives as Christians in the church no we have we have our marching orders you know the lord is clear and he's our example.
[9:55] And you might say pastor why bring all this up and I say because it's the place we are in scripture it has everything to do with this you know the title the title of this message is mindful of the conflict mindful of the conflict and if you notice the apostles their concern for the the young church in Thessalonica has everything to do with the having the right attitude in spiritual battle you know they could not afford to be lax or they would be done and all they were up against and would have stopped them in their tracks if they did not have a good spiritual work ethic keep pressing on be determined pushing forward no matter what it took there was so much pressure so much negativity so many obstacles so many lies told about them they had to deal with.
[10:55] That was being told about them and when you look at these verses you know we see, looking at verse 18 you know therefore we wanted to come to you even I Paul time and time again but Satan hindered us.
God's enemy and our enemy hindered them.
You know, Jesus said in John 15.
[11:27] 18 through 20, if the world hates you, you know that it hated me before it hated you.
If you were of the world, the world would love its own.
Yet because you are not of the world, but I choose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
Remember the word that I said to you, a servant is not greater than his master.
If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours, yours also.
And so they hate you because they hated Jesus first.
The devil first hated God, and he hates us because he hates God.
That's a good camp to be in.
And because we love God, he hates us. So be it.
And so he hindered us, Paul says. us. Satan hindered us.
So this was a direct attack against God's ministers, roadblocks, by force, keeping them from moving forward.
I mean, that's interesting to me.
[12:43] It would be a conflict between the enemies of God against the servants of God.
That's what what was taking place and God allowed them to keep his servants from doing what they desired to do, God allowed that and that seems puzzling doesn't seem puzzling.
[13:13] Until we consider that the conflict is necessary in the accomplishment of God's will.
[13:21] And then it starts to make sense. And unless there is pushback, valid force against us, there wouldn't be no conflict. There wouldn't be no battle.
But there is, and it's by God's design.
It's by God's design. and so satan hindered hindered the apostle Paul for what is our hope our joy our crown of rejoicing it is not even you in the presence of our lord Jesus Christ that is coming for you are our glory and joy he said to them you you are we're honored by you by you we shine Paul saying you're a glory, and joy you're the one that gives us joy you cause us to have joy you give us gladness that's what Paul's saying you know it reminded me of third john 1 4 where it says I have no greater joy, than to hear that my children walk in truth no greater joy you give me you give me that joy joy Paul's saying so so he's totally focused on them it's like he sets himself aside and he goes you're my joy you're my glory you're the one that i care about we're doing everything to get to you.
[14:47] Therefore when we could no longer endure it we thought it good to be left in Athens alone and and sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ to establish and to encourage you concerning your faith.
When we no longer could endure it, couldn't take it anymore.
We had to know how you were. Couldn't stand it, couldn't take it anymore.
[15:19] And couldn't stand the thought of the enemy wiggling his way in and undermining what you know to be true.
That was the heart of them to get back to them because he knew the battle scenario and he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that the enemy would try to undermine their faith.
And he cared about that and we should care about that for those who have been entrusted in some way to us. Are we always so inconvenienced?
Or do we care enough to do what it takes to minister to those?
And he said, they sent Timothy, our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish and encourage you.
It speaks of so to make you stable.
[16:19] To make you strong, to sure up your faith, to make you firm on a firm foundation, to establish you and to encourage you.
That word means to address any of the issues or confusion, to answer questions.
You know, where the devil begins to put the doubts and the minds, we want to answer those questions.
That's what Paul's concern is. He's just letting them know his heart that no one should be shaken by these afflictions.
For you yourselves know that we are appointed to this.
So they begin to get news.
Just how bad it was going for the apostles.
So not to call into question our ministries like some were doing.
Not to call in question our ministries because of all the trouble that has come upon us.
[17:30] So that you would not doubt that God is with us and the things that we've been telling you are true.
He's concerned. For in fact, for in fact, we told you before when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation just as it happened. And you know.
In other words, we gave you a heads up that this was gonna take place.
We informed you. You know, the Apostle Paul, again, And where is it?
2 Timothy 3.12, yes. And all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
Be mindful of the conflict. Title of the message. Life's not all about pleasantries.
You know, we're all for R&R. Absolutely. But all R&R is never won battles.
[18:30] For in fact we told you ahead of time that we'd suffered this tribulation so we gave you a heads up and so for this reason you know having this in mind when I could no longer endure it I sent to know your faith lest by some means the tempter had tempted you and our labor might be in vain the tempter another name for satan our weapon against him is god's word god's word gives us a heads up you know the bible tells us that god's word is the sword of the spirit right Ephesians 6 god's word believed and applied exposes the lies the lying words of god's enemy.
[19:17] Enemy and so and i want to draw your attention again to verse 18, being mindful of the conflict I want to focus on that a little bit more, Paul expresses you know time and time again you know he tried tried to make it to them but the enemy kept disrupting, how did he disrupt?
However you know it's all on the table it's all on the table how is he disrupting? what is he doing?
I don't know it may be completely different in your life than it is in mine but he's disrupting.
[20:04] We need the Holy Spirit to reveal that. And so, beware.
So, as I consider this, my thought is, God could have stopped the devil from interfering, yet because God did not, we must conclude it is all part of God's perfect plan.
You have to be settled there. The Apostle Paul never felt insecure because of all his affliction and conflict.
As a matter of fact, he's telling the young believers, we told you this was going to happen.
God's been faithful. Now, if we had planned it, we would avoid all of that. We want bliss.
We want easy and so forth.
[20:55] Have you heard the saying, no pain, no gain? well that is true so many ways but not only in the physical realm, preparing for comment combat or competition or so on not only in that way but it's true spiritually as well going through hard times develops us our spiritual muscles our spiritual Spiritual wellness develops us to better serve God and impact the lives of others to follow Jesus. Isn't that what's important to us?
Isn't that important to us that we better serve the Lord and impact the lives of others for Jesus?
Or is it more important to us to be comfortable and avoid all hardship?
Which one would you choose?
Choose well I'm telling you we would choose the path of least resistance but fortunately god chooses for us and then we get to enter into that victory otherwise we would avoid it altogether I mean that's just our nature the bible tells us in James chapter one about.
[22:12] These hardships producing spiritual health.
Productivity by brethren counted all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
And it all adds up. Peter tells us, 2 Peter 1, he says, but also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.
For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
And it's saying otherwise we would.
But if these things are yours and abound, you're never going to be barren or unfruitful.
[23:21] So the Lord sees to it. We have to be mindful of the conflict.
We have to understand it's a battle.
And I know we all want to be comfortable. I know we all want to avoid these things.
You know, Paul tells Timothy, Timothy, in 1 Timothy chapter 6, where he says, Fight the good fight of faith.
Lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called, and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. Fight the good fight.
You know, I can't remember what movie it was, where one of the lines was, I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
Good morning, Vietnam. Okay. Okay, it's probably not a movie to recommend, by the way.
But anyway, I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
So, I mean, if you use that, you know, in a battle, spiritual battle sense, you know, you get up every morning, just, Lord, what do you have?
Love the smell of battle in the air because I'm where I need to be.
What's next? What's on your agenda for me? Being, tracking with the Lord.
But why not bliss? well because bliss is reserved for heaven that's why and that will be here soon enough.
[24:46] In the meantime, be engaged. Heaven will come soon enough.
In the meantime, take full opportunity what God has given us.
You know, I mean, that day will come soon enough. When, you know, it tells us there that in Revelation 21, Now I saw a new heaven, a new earth.
For the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.
Then I John saw the holy city the new Jerusalem coming down from heaven from God prepared as a bride adorned for her husband and I heard a loud voice from heaven saying behold the tabernacle of God is with men and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people God himself will be with them and be their God and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes there shall be no more death death nor sorrow nor crying there shall be no more pain for the former things have passed away, that's going to come soon enough but right now it's time for tears Jesus wept it's the shortest verse in the bible john 11 Jesus wept shortest verse in the bible now it's time for tears ears.
[26:06] I don't want it. I don't want that. Well, you know, God is gracious, fortunately, you know, and I only say, well, you know, he works with us, even when we don't want that.
You know, I mean, that's just, God doesn't kick us to the curb.
You know, I think he works on us, and then even if we we get a little window at the very end where we're tracking with him. He's there.
But I only say that the longer we track with him, the more blessed we are.
You know, so get it now rather than later. You know, he never leaves us or forsakes us.
And don't be critical of each other, you know, because, you know, some of us are just slower at getting started. started.
But being critical, that just even makes it slower. You're critical, you're throwing things in the weaker believers' lives.
If you get critical, all you're doing is slowing them down more, maybe even tripping them up completely.
That's not our place. Pray for them. Encourage them. Share the exciting things that the Lord has shown you. That's what you do.
You know, and you know, that's the way of the Lord.
I mean, I just always think about Jesus shaking his head at his disciples.
[27:28] Like, how long must I suffer, you guys? I mean, all that you've seen.
I mean, you know, Jesus never doubted his choices, but, you know, I know he had to shake his head at them.
[27:42] And he did. And I think he shakes his head at us a lot. But he never forsook them. And you know what? When it came time, they stepped up.
When it came time, they stepped up. But Paul knew it. Paul even went on record in Philippians 3, verse 10, where he says that I may know him, the power of his resurrection, the fellowship of his suffering being formed to his death.
So Paul is basically saying, saying, if life hand you a lemon, make lemonade. I always like that expression.
Take full advantage of any hardships in this life. Be expectant, Paul says.
I want to know the fellowship of the suffering, so be it. I want to know him. I want to know him.
[28:36] And so, again, verse 18. When they were hindered.
You notice he wasn't concerned with me, myself, and I. But he was concerned with the young believers in Thessalonica.
And in any conflict, if we do not have a clear objective and purpose or goal, we'll be in trouble when things get hard.
When things even get life-threatening. Got to have a clear objective.
Clear purpose. Clear goal. of what the Lord has us in that place for.
There's been many, church history, been called to a very high place.
And we look at it and we think, I would never want to be called there.
I couldn't take it. I couldn't handle it.
Well, on your own you couldn't. But if that was the work of God in your heart when that time came, you would be able to.
[29:40] Our lives are not randomly being lived, but purposefully being lived.
And if we lose sight of that, we will have troubles with conflict.
[29:53] And troubles with conflict could also be interpreted fighting against God's will.
Fighting against His will. Because you're not mindful of the conflict.
You've lost perspective. the temporal has more impact than the eternal in your perspective and then we begin to fight against the very will of god rather we must realize that conflict is necessary for the accomplishing of our mission and that mission is the rescuing of people from an otherwise tragic Tragic end.
That's our mission. And rescuing others from not only a tragic end, but also some from a tragic existence.
[30:42] Here. When we follow the Lord, we'll be those who are understanding these things about life and we'll be able to communicate that to others, the clear message.
So that confusion or deception, whatever it may be, does not destroy faith.
And that's where the heart of Paul was when he said, I couldn't stand it.
I tried to get to you guys. We had to send Timothy.
I wanted to be there. His heart was all with them.
But see, keep in mind, while he was being afflicted by persecution, I want to get there. I want to make sure they're okay.
They're okay. Human nature, me, myself, and I. As long as I'm okay, then I'm okay.
[31:33] Then maybe I can have a little time for somebody else. But until then, I want to make sure I'm okay. That's human nature.
We need the Lord. We need the filling of the Holy Spirit in order to have that same heart for others that are willing to put yourself aside and others in that place.
You know, so again, you know, we look at, look at verse five of chapter three.
For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you and our labor might be in vain.
And so again, Paul's concern that Satan would fool them, that they would believe the lie, and he didn't want them to believe the lie, that all that had to happen to them.
[32:31] All that had happened to Paul, he wanted them to know it was only proof of their ministry.
We told you ahead of time. We delivered the word of God.
And now you know, if you believed our word, that these things were supposed to happen to us.
This is only proof of our ministry.
Ministry and so Paul was trying to communicate that because he cared about that that was proof of our ministry you know again you look at three verse three and four that no one should be shaken by these afflictions for you yourselves know that we are appointed to this for in fact we told you before when we were with you that we should suffer this tribulation as it had happened and you know You think, Pastor, you're sure repeating yourself a lot.
[33:31] Yeah, that's the best way to remember something. And it's my prayer at the ending of the service, and when you walk out of here, remember those points.
That that affliction is just proof that you're on track with the Lord.
When you're serving the Lord, because the enemy wants to come in and deceive you to negativity saying, well, there must be because of sin in your life.
Now, if there's sin in your life, you will not be confused about it.
The Holy Spirit will put his finger on it. You'll know what it is.
You repent. He forgives you. You move on.
That's the way God deals with us. The devil, he comes in.
He wants to undermine you, confuse you, deceive you into thinking like this conflict has to be for something.
I'm not sure what it is. That's not how the Lord works.
You get that? And that's what Paul was concerned with. That they're going to be deceived into thinking these things and it's just not true.
And ask me how I know.
[34:35] Because I'm just sharing my experience. I'm just sharing what the enemy's done against me.
You know, I'm not no intellect. I'm just a person who served the Lord and learned all these usually by hard knocks.
And yet God has been faithful. And I think he shook his head at me a lot.
I really do.
And yet he just was always there.
[35:07] And so god's word gives us a heads up not necessary to specifics, you know you talk about these afflictions these trials these persecutions and and and you fill in the blanks what are they what is the hardship what is the roadblock what is the hindrance what What is persecution?
What is the affliction? Fill in the blank.
And God's word just tells us they're going to be there, but not the specifics of those necessarily.
And so this is important to know as well.
Just to be prepared for whatever the enemy does throw at us. Improvise.
[35:53] Adapt. Overcome. I always like that.
That usually I don't remember it but I do right now the marines say that and you know it's so.
[36:05] Applicable because and I often think about that you know these special trained forces military forces they go through they start with boot camp and then some of them get selected to higher training and then from there they go through the higher training and then they go through amazing training and they go through all this kind of stuff and then they up end up in the the battlefield and the first thing to do is hit something that they've never trained for, they have to they have to say okay all of our training with all of our training we've got to figure this out because we didn't get trained about this one and I think that's spiritually the same thing all of your years of serving the lord where did this come from this blindsided me but it doesn't matter i know certain basic principles that are going to apply right now one of those is not to lose hope and that god's with you so, and so this is the way the entirety of the bible is written so that we have a heads up to the conditions of life the entirety of the bible is written that way that's why it's important to learn what the Bible says and how that relates to the promises of God.
All the Bible. Which, by the way...
[37:33] You know, so to speak, it's been written in stone. You know, so that we don't have to no longer guess at life.
We no longer have to guess at any of this. God's given us instruction.
And he's cleared the air on that kind of stuff. You know, if we're willing to believe him.
So we have a new year ahead of us. And many people will be making a new year's resolution.
New year's resolution to better themselves, to accomplish certain things, to strengthen relationships, and so on.
And that's good, no doubt.
I would only add that believers should daily make the choice to do these things.
[38:18] Because it's much easier for me to commit day by day.
Because I know I'm going to fail. I know I'm going to fail.
And when I do, the next day, the next moment, I can get back on track. It's great.
[38:35] And so, but if it's yearly, that would be discouraging to wait a whole year for the next New Year's resolution.
I would probably, January 1, I'd blow it.
I'd think, man, I've got 364 more days to make another resolution.
I couldn't handle that. So I like the day-by-day thing. But because life is short, I want to take full advantage of every day.
And that's why Jesus said what he said. First of all, he tells us not to worry about tomorrow.
Today has enough, how we say on our plate.
But Jesus said in Luke 9.23, then he said to them all, if you desire to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
He knows how we're wired this needs to be a daily decision that we make and because life is short, because we want to take advantage of every opportunity why because we're not promised tomorrow we're not promised tomorrow we've all been blessed with Sunday but we're not promised Monday we've all been blessed with a whole 2023 2023, but we're not promised any of 2024.
[40:04] That's the truth.
This is the way we need to keep. That's what James tells us.
James tells us, come now, you who say tomorrow, today or tomorrow, we will go to such and such a city, spend a year, buy and sell, make a profit.
Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow.
For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
Instead, you ought to say, if the Lord wills we shall live and do this or that.
Tracking with the Lord. You know if the Lord if the Lord, wills I'll open my eyes on Monday Monday morning to praise him once again and then take up my cross because that's the counsel of Jesus Christ and not to worry about Tuesday.
[40:54] Monday has a lot there to accomplish if we're tracking with the Lord, you know to take up our cross cross daily and follow him amen and so and so I'd only say that if we're of the mind to make a new year's resolution that it should be for 365 days we should take up our cross daily I'm going to make a new year's resolution that for 365 days I'm going to take up my cross daily that's a good one, you know I don't mean to put down anybody's but that's a good one to make that's what that's a count from the council of the lord amen so let's be excited about what the lord has in store once again maranatha come quickly Lord Jesus it's gonna be crazy I think this year once again, I'm not sure the details I just know that things are going to get more chaotic than they are if that's possible.
[41:56] And so, let's stand together. If you need prayer, please come forward, okay?
And we'll pray for you. Lord Jesus, thank you for your word to us again.
Lord, we look forward to what you have for us the remainder of this day.
And if you bless us with next year.
Lord, we know that you're coming back quickly and that's in the forefront of our mind.
But help us each day, Lord, that we remain to be faithful, to do the work that you've given us to do.
[42:36] To have a good spiritual work ethic, and to be tuned into what you have, and just to be mindful of the conflict that is ever before us, daily before us, Lord.
Lord, not to get, you know, caught off guard with our shield of faith down, exposed to the enemy.
I pray for all that are here. Lord, I pray that their commitment would be, a firm commitment, that they would realize there might not be a lot they understand, but they understand that you're faithful and that you've allowed certain things to take place and that you have an eternal purpose for them.
And I pray that all of us here, or no matter, a young Christian, an old Christian, that fundamentally, Lord, we would understand this so that we wouldn't be caught off guard.
Lord, we'd understand that from the get-go.
And so just help us to do that, Lord. Help us to bring glory to you.
We pray in Jesus' name. Amen. God bless you.
