[0:00] So we're going to be in 1 Thessalonians 2.
And like I do, I like to read the text that we're going to cover first.
So if you'll stand with me, 1 Thessalonians 2, first 12 verses, Paul writing for you, "'Yourselves know, brethren, that our coming to you is not in vain.
But even after we had suffered before and were spitefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict.
[0:40] For exhortation did not come from error or uncleanness, nor was it in deceit.
But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts.
For neither at any time did we use flattering words, as you know, or a cloak of covetousness, God is witness.
[1:06] Nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when we might have made demands as apostles of Christ.
But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children.
So affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives because you had become dear to us.
For you remember, brethren, our labor and toil, for laboring night and day, that you might not be a burden, that we might not be a burden to any of you.
We preach to you the gospel of God. you are witnesses and God also, how devoutly and justly and blamelessly we behaved ourselves among you who believe.
As you know, how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you as a father does his own children that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
[2:07] Lord, we thank you for your word once again. We thank you that you have given us your word as a lamb to our feet and a light to our path to illuminate and give us understanding in a very dark darkened world and and Lord that we become children of light and able also Lord to spread the good news and to share the truth and we pray that we'd be able to do that by the power that comes from you and so just bless this time we pray in Jesus name amen you can all be seated
So the title of the message, Leadership That Works.
[2:49] Leadership That Works, we see that in our text, as Paul would be given an example of that leadership through him and the guys that were with him.
The Apostle Paul, remember, he's writing this letter to Thessalonica, and again, he's affirming the words to the very young church in Thessalonica.
Young believers, maybe two or three years old in the Lord and those who, remember, had previously been steeped in that pagan culture.
[3:25] Paul made reference there in the first chapter, verse nine, where he says, for they themselves declare concerning us what matter of entry we had to you and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.
And so he makes reference to that, just to give a little snapshot of Thessalonica, a little background.
I think backgrounds are necessary for perspective, because remember, there was a spiritual battle going on.
Always keep that in mind whenever those that would embrace the gospel in a church would be born, and then of course a spiritual battle ensues.
And they're young believers, they're continuing on, they're sharing their faith.
It's just a very basic, simple faith that they're sharing, kind of like I was blind, but now I see.
Things that they didn't know that they were struggling with, but they're battling it out, and they're standing for the Lord in the pagan culture.
[4:26] And remember, it's always one of the tactics of the enemy is to get God's people to either not know the promises that are given to them by the Lord, or to get them to not trust in the Lord.
And so this one commentator kind of gives a little bit of what that church would have been immersed in quote, in 315 BC, the Greek general Cassandra, who later became king of Macedonia, founded Thessalonica, It later developed into a major commercial seaport and a military launching point.
[5:06] At the time of Paul's second missionary journey around AD 42/52, Thessalonica was the capital and most populous city of Macedonia, boasting over 200,000 people situated on flourishing trade routes, both by land and sea.
The city was a bustling center of commerce.
William Barclay points out the strategic importance of such a city for the spread of the gospel.
If Christianity, quote, if Christianity was settled there, it was bound to spread east along the Ignatian Road until all Asia was conquered, and west until it stormed even to the city of Rome.
The coming of Christianity to Thessalonica was crucial in the making of it into a world religion.
As a free city in the Roman Empire, Thessalonica enjoyed some level of self-governance.
[6:05] Of its affairs without constant interference by the emperor.
Such a prized status, however, could have been lost if the city's leaders failed to maintain peace and security, or if the Romans suspected sedition or rebellion.
Both of these charges were leveled against Paul and Silas by the mob that the Jews had stirred up against the Christians in that episode, Thessalonian politics, economics, and religion were turned against the Christians, leaving the young church in a state of uncertainty.
And so there you go. So they were in the midst of a spiritual battle because the position of Paul, Silas, and the leaders that came and were teaching the gospel, and then they had departed and leaving the church in that sort of environment with certain questions, but they stood true to the gospel.
And so when the gospel is delivered and embraced in a well-to-do community.
[7:06] Guess who will show up and try to capitalize on that those new believers.
[7:13] You know of course the charlatans and the parasites you know the sharks smelling the blood in the water will come around and it seems this is why Paul is stressing how they served the example they had given and so how they worked among them not taking advantage of them and so they would stress in this section their testimony among them, what they did, how they conducted themselves.
And you remember, this is the word to them, you remember as he's writing back this letter how we were and how we conducted ourselves.
And so we could have been supported for our ministry as apostles, but rather we serve, working, supporting ourselves.
And, you know, he said that there, remember verse six, we just read there in chapter two, nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when we might have made demands as the apostles of Christ.
[8:20] You know, and also, even in the first chapter in verses five and six, where he says, for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and and the Holy Spirit in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you, for your sake, and you became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word, much affliction with joy of the Holy Spirit." We were your examples, and you followed our example.
[8:49] And so, and we see there also in the ninth verse of the second chapter, where he said, for you remember brethren our labor toil for laboring night and day that we might not be a burden to anyone. We preach to you the gospel.
So you see how he's stressing these things and I think that that's important because all went on record to show that to show that it was acceptable.
[9:18] To those who ministered to be supported in the gospel.
He said, by the gospel, he said, First Timothy chapter five, verse 17, 18, let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.
For the scripture says, you shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain, and the labor is worthy of his wages. And so I say that because Paul was plenty qualified to be that person.
But he's trying to make a point here. And if you want clarification on that whole subject, you read 1 Corinthians 9, where he spelled it out so clearly.
But I think we see here, Paul and the others are given a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, where the Holy Spirit says, don't take any support, go to work.
And the sensitivity was, we're going to work, which was Paul's MO anyway.
But God knowing the future attacks against the church, so God weaponized the Apostles testimonies to counter the coming attacks against those who would attempt to infiltrate the church as supposed leadership.
[10:35] They'd have a lot to say, but they were just there for the goods, coming in to, you know, the church is planted, and then they come in behind.
You know, those who saw that in 1 Corinthians as well, in a big way.
And so here, we're seeing that, and so Paul's demonstrating and stressing the importance of the example of leaders. We see that here.
To live above reproach. The leaders to live above reproach.
The Bible says, 1 Timothy chapter 3, verses 1 through 3, This is a faithful saying, if a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.
A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded.
[11:28] Of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach, not given to whine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous.
And so rather, what does the Bible teach us?
Godliness with contentment is great gain.
And so this person in this position needs to be modest in his lifestyle.
And it's huge to be modest, not extravagant.
[12:00] And so also, you know, I had an incredible example of that through my pastor, Pastor Chuck Smith, who was given an incredible ministry.
And you know, if you've seen the Jesus Revolution movie and all that, it only gives just a little piece of it.
But incredible ministry. And I remember that he was always living modest in his simple little home, you know, home that he had and driving a car that was never a head turner, just ran good and, you know, was very practical.
I remember one time going to a pastor's conference and a couple of the big Calvary Chapel pastors started to get these pretty fancy cars.
And Pastor Chuck got up there and he just made a little comment on, you know, that Mercedes that was sitting out there. and one of them was some other fancy car.
He made two or three comments, and everybody in the place knew.
One belonged to, I think it was Greg Laurie, and another one belonged to one of the other guys, and then these guys sold their cars the next week.
He didn't have to say anything to them personally, just commented on how sometimes that sends the wrong message. Really gently, he was always that way.
But it just hit like a hammer, you know. And I remember he was always a great example in that.
And he was one, if he was at all greedy when the ministry first started there, and God was doing a great thing and that person had made an investment that came to maturity and it was worth a million dollars.
[13:29] And his commitment to the Lord was, is after it became into maturity, then he would donate that all to, all the proceeds to Christian ministry.
And it did, and it turned out to be worth a million dollars.
And so he approached Pastor Chuck and said, hey, I have this, I want to give it to you.
And it was a time when the church was needing a place to meet and all this, you know, things that were going on. Pastor Chuck was said, let me pray about that.
And then the next day comes back and he says, you know, the Lord said he wants to do something different, but there's a ministry in LA that could really use that money.
So, you know, that makes a huge statement about where his heart was at.
And he knew, you know, you can't stop the work of the Lord.
And so, he was my example and such a blessing to me.
And I think that, you know, Paul is kind of setting the tone.
[14:25] You know, for those who are leaders that are setting a good example.
And they're, you know, they would be the hardest of workers.
I know that one scripture that came to mind that was Luke chapter 22, verses 24 through 27, the disciples, they're arguing who's greatest.
[14:47] You know, now there was also a dispute among them as to which of them should be considered the greatest.
And he said to them, Jesus said, the kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors, but not so among you.
On the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves.
For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves?
It is not he who, is it not he who sits at the table, yet I am among you as one who serves. So I'm your example.
And so it's an upside down, you know, situation when we're Christians than what the world would be thinking.
And so and so Paul is making that point, you know, willing to work hard, willing to work hard.
And no one will question the minister of the gospel that goes to hard places, where people live in third-world countries or impoverished places where the people are struggling.
But in Thessalonica, it was different. It was a well-to-do place.
[16:01] And the apostles worked. They could have very easily been taken care of in that way monetarily, but they worked.
They chose to do that, so they wouldn't send the wrong message.
And being others-minded, but being sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
And so we see.
[16:22] In verse one, for you yourselves know, brethren, that our coming to you was not in vain.
And so it was not a worthless, fruitless venture, us coming to you.
You know, it wasn't a waste of time, despite what the rumors were, what people are saying.
And I remember, you know, years ago, you know, struggling with that sort of thought. You know, we can always question the things that we do for the Lord, or things that we think should have turned out one way and they didn't.
I remember way back when I was in Lake Elsinore, and it was back in the mid-80s, somewhere, they had a SWAT meet that was open every weekend, and on Saturdays, I used to go and set up two long tables and have my little spot, and I used to put out all Christian literature, And a lot of that was dealing with cults and false religions and all this.
And I'd just sort of stand there to whoever showed interest and then talk to them about whatever it is they were interested in.
And I would think, oh, you know, this is one way of winning people to the Lord.
So I'd go out there. And I was there for a year on Saturdays.
And I never led one person to the Lord.
[17:40] And I'm thinking like, man, you know, was me doing this all in vain or what?
Well, no, because through the whole time, I would end up talking to backslidden Christians and praying with them.
So then at the end of it all, it wasn't a waste because I found out I wasn't an evangelist, you know?
And, but I was a pastor because that's who the Lord would have me talking to.
And so I learned that and I know that we have ideas and the best thing we could do is just serve the Lord, do our best, and commit the rest.
And sometimes things don't work out the way that you think they are, but we learn. And it's not in vain.
Whenever we get the Word of God out, it's never in vain.
Why? Because the Bible tells us that. In Isaiah 55, 10 and 11, for as the rain comes down and the snow from heaven and do not return there but water the earth and make it bring forth in bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth, it shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish what I please and it shall prosper in the things for which I sent it.
[19:01] It's what God pleases, not what we would please, be pleased with, but what God is pleased with.
So yeah, are seeds planted? Certainly. Are they watered? Absolutely.
Is there gonna be increase? Because we say yes, because it's God's word. It's not our word.
We might not be able to see it, but it's never void.
And so, you know, as long as we're getting God's word out and not our own word out, we know that it's going to be fruitful.
And that's why we know the radio ministry is so important.
[19:36] We're getting God's word out. And we even get word back that it's being fruitful, but even if we didn't get word back that it's being fruitful, we still know that it's pleasing to the Lord because it's his word that's going forth.
And so Paul makes that statement. You know, was our coming to you, was it not in vain?
But even, he says, it was not in vain, but even after we had suffered before and were spitefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict.", And so even after they had suffered.
[20:21] You know, and oftentimes when you study Paul's ministry, you would see that not everything was very positive.
As a matter of fact, he was usually getting beaten and all kinds of horrible things, shipwrecked and stoned, and one thing after another, things would be going on in Paul's ministry.
And oftentimes, things, like I said, even after they were attacked, it says here in Philippi, they still went forth in boldness to share the gospel, even after getting beaten, even after being in prison.
But because of their faithfulness as they worshiped the Lord, God did a great miracle.
So how could somebody, after being broken out of jail, and God does amazing miracles that you wouldn't go the next place and do the same thing even if it meant suffering.
And so that's the point that Paul is making and they did not stop.
And oftentimes you know consistency is something that we lack.
We get discouraged and then in our service, in our ministry and we become inconsistent or we become afraid or we give up for whatever reason, you know, pastor...
Cameron there in Victoria, the Calvary Chapel in Victoria, you know, all through the COVID, like us, you know, they stayed open.
[21:44] And, you know, the officials, the government officials and all began to put pressure and they wanted a meeting with them.
And they had already threatened them.
And so of course I'm on the board up there. So we had lots of conversations and this meeting was, you know, gonna be a big meeting that he was gonna have, and I remember talking with him, and he had all these pages of how it would be okay for them to meet according to the Constitution and all these kinds of things, and I just said to him, I go, you know, Cameron, I go, you're probably all right on all that stuff.
I said, but you're not a politician, you're a pastor.
So why don't you meet the officials on that page, that you're a pastor?
Tell them what God's doing, and he did.
And at the end of the meeting, the officials were telling them how they should reword things so that they could stay open and keep doing what they're doing. It was amazing.
You know, the Spirit of God just worked.
[22:44] And so he was consistent. And basically, because he was, there was another church that had splintered and the leadership wasn't on the same page and they ended up having problems.
Well, some of the people in that congregation ended up part of the Calvary Chapel there in Victoria.
And now since that church really hasn't regained footing, the remaining leadership there, the pastor and the elders have approached Cameron and saying, hey, will you just take over this church?
We just, the pastor wants to leave, they don't have a legal board.
So we already had one meeting, and then tomorrow we're gonna have another meeting, just to say, if this is answered a prayer that the church there, Calvary Chapel, still needs a place to meet.
Now this church has a building paid off and a house paid off and money in the bank and they just wanna give it all over to Calvary Chapel Victoria and say, hey, will you just take over this congregation?
We don't even have leaders here to take it.
And that was all through their testimony of consistency that sent that message is what they're after. You'd say, how do you put a price tag on good leadership?
[23:50] Really, that doesn't bow to the establishment if it's contrary to the word of God. How do you put a price tag on that?
And so, be praying about that, and you have a meeting tomorrow and just see what direction that goes, see if that's the door that God's opening or not.
So consistency, even after being spitefully treated or shamefully treated, things were being said and they continued with the gospel.
So the gospel became fighting words. Has it ever happened to you?
Oh, you can talk about God all day long with people.
You can talk about a higher power with people.
But all of a sudden, if you get specific and you say that Jesus Christ is the only way, truth and the life, all of a sudden it's fighting words.
And all hell will break loose.
And that's what was going on because there was an embrace of many gods in that pagan culture.
Many gods. You could be religious and just worship whatever God you want, but don't tell us that Jesus is the only way.
Now you've got those are fighting, fighting words, you know, and that cordial conversation stops.
[25:06] Verse 3, For our exhortation did not come from error or uncleanness, nor was it in deceit.
In other words, Paul's saying, hey, if you look up the meaning of those words, I wasn't baiting you with tricky words.
I'm telling you straight up truth. I was telling you the truth.
What God has done, what God is doing, but verse four, as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts.
And so we've been approved by God. Check our resume.
[25:41] Character references. Do a background check.
You know, wouldn't it be great to have a confidence like that in the Lord?
You say, hey, I'm approved by God.
You know, to be walking in such a way, never perfect, you know, but knowing that you're approved by God because of the work of Jesus Christ, you're accepted in the Beloved.
And so you stand upon the work of Jesus Christ, not on your own merit, but then to be confident and know, hey, I'm approved by God to be in entrusted, privileged with the gospel, and able to share the truth with confidence.
[26:19] You know, it's a sad thing when, you know, your life is compromised and you go to share and you feel very uncomfortable, very hypocritical, because your life really isn't lining up with the things you know to do.
And so you kind of back off, or you kind of avoid the subject, or you're afraid. Why? Because your life isn't really lining up.
Because you're not really serving the Lord, or you're not really believing God's Word and so forth. So you back off.
And Paul's making a statement just contrary to that.
Even so, we speak not as pleasing men. In other words, not sugarcoating the message.
We've always told you the truth. And, you know, Paul even wrote to the church of Galatia, where he said this, in Galatians 1, 9 and 10, is, as we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
For do I now persuade men or God, or do I seek to please men?
For if I still please men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.
And of course the context is the message.
If the message I give is watered down gospel so that somebody else won't be offended, I am not a servant of God. And that's the challenge.
[27:43] Are we willing to water down the truth of the gospel so that you can have a pleasant conversation?
You don't want to rub anybody the wrong way?
Then you're not a servant of the Lord.
That's what he's saying. And then notice, but God, he says, not pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts.
Now God is the only one qualified to test the heart.
We're not qualified. We don't know enough. The Bible says in Jeremiah 17, 9 and 10, the heart is deceitful above all things, desperately wicked. Who can know it?
Not us, would be the answer.
[28:22] But I the Lord search the heart.
I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings.
So it's the Lord who knows our heart. Even our heart can deceive us, but the Lord knows our heart. And so we want to stay close to him so that we can have a correct perspective not to be deceived.
4, verse 5, neither at any time did we use flattering words as you know, or a cloak of covetousness.
God is witness.
So not saying anything in any way that wasn't forthright and true.
Not tainted words, not watered down words, not trying to cover up something deceitfully, for verse six, nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when we might have made demands as the apostles of Christ.
So they weren't looking for brownie points.
They weren't looking for accolades from men to try and save face or any of that, you know, to be recognized or noted or honored by man.
No, their concern was that they would please the Lord and Him alone.
Now, oftentimes in pleasing the Lord and the Lord alone, men are blessed.
[29:45] You see, this here is in the contrast of compromise.
And so that's what the point he's making, not to seek man's glory.
And we could have made demands. And so they wouldn't have been at least out of line to have done that, to be have been supported by the church.
But that's not what God led, was leading them. You know, and many times, you know, we have examples of that, where, you know, we have those that are working hard and not necessarily even in a place where people have the means even to support.
I remember hearing one pastor who was given a testimony of where he lived, and people really were very poor.
And so the way that they would tithe, they'd bring in some firewood, and they'd bring in some eggs, or whatever that they had that they could share with the pastor.
And then the pastor would work and try to make things, but stick to it.
It was so cool. I met, I seen a pastor at the last conference that I hadn't seen in many years, like, I don't know, six or seven years.
And so somehow or another, we just didn't connect. But before that, we're seeing each other every year. And I saw him from across the way and I went and gave him a great big hug.
And he's right at the top of the grapevine in California.
It's a little it's not.
[31:13] It's not the main stop, but anyway, it's a town up there.
I can't remember right now, but you don't even, you know, as many times as I drove over the grapevine, I still don't know the name of the town.
And so, and he's still there. It's a tiny church. It's a fluctuating community.
The people come up frustrated out of the LA basin. Well, let me get out of LA basin.
I still need to keep my job there. So they go up on top of the grapevine and then they get tired of nothing going on up there and they've moved back to the city.
And that's kind of his church. But there he is for 20 years, just serving the Lord and doing well in his family and all.
So, you know, there's sacrifices that are made, but Paul says, hey, we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children.
So the example there, he gives us that closest bond and their connection to basic need and care.
Nursing mother, that's how we were to you. So affectionately longing for you, We were well pleased to impart to you, not only the gospel, but also our own lives because you had become dear to us. We were all in.
[32:21] We loved you with the greatest love. It speaks of just really a deep love, a longing, and to see them embrace the gospel and to walk with the Lord, letting them know just how much that they meant to them and with their own lives.
Sacrificially, is what he's saying.
Now, Jesus went on record, John 15, 12 and 13, "'This is my command, that you love one another.
"'As I have loved you, greater love has no one than this, "'than to lay down one's life for his friends.'".
[32:55] And so being fully invested, Paul's saying, for you remember, brethren, our labor and toil, for laboring night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you.
We preach to you the gospel of God.
Now it doesn't tell us what kind of work, but that they labored and toiled.
Most likely tent making would have been on the list, but not necessarily, doesn't say that there.
But because we don't know, I like that. I like that because we're not restricted when we make application or how we would relate to what's being spoken of here, the service that we would give, the work that we would give.
And you know sometimes it's important when details are left out as well as when they're added.
[33:45] And you know example here, but I like to use the example of the thorn in the flesh that Paul, you know, when he says in 2nd Corinthians chapter 12 where he He says, and lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure.
What was that thorn? You notice we're not given.
And so when we read that, we can identify with the thorns in our own lives of what that would be like.
I serve the Lord and I've got this thorn.
And we're so comforted to know that even with the thorn, and Paul moved forward.
And so I like that. The labor and toil. I don't know what labor and toil you might.
[34:33] Serving the Lord, whatever it may be, whatever your laboring and toiling is.
I mean, some people have the phone call ministry, or the writing of cards ministry.
Or, you know, now for me, writing anything would be like pulling teeth.
You know, I'd rather go dig a hole than try and write a card or something.
You know, so it is. I mean, we're all made different. We're all gifted different.
And so, you know, the bottom line is that you're serving the Lord by serving others.
And so that he says that we might not be a burden to any of you.
You know, the devil, he looks for angles, wedges, and inroads to deceive and to destroy.
To destroy godly leaders, and also as well as Christians in general.
You know, we need to do our best not to give him any ammunition.
Don't give him any ammunition that we might not burden you.
Don't be a burden to people. Be a blessing to people.
[35:37] And the ammunition that being a burden to somebody is for the devil to come in and start working that person over, because you're a burden to them.
When you proclaim Jesus Christ, don't be a burden to them. Be a blessing to them.
Even if you're a person that has great needs, still be a blessing.
Be a heart of thanksgiving, express that.
In verse 10, for you are witnesses and God also, you are witnesses and God also, how devoutly and justly and blamelessly we behaved ourselves among you who believe.
Again, using themselves as an example.
We're set apart, it's indisputable that these things, these qualities in the Lord and blameless.
In other words, we cannot be blamed or the blame can't stick.
[36:31] Whether we're censored or examined or investigated or all the above, because there's always people fishing to try and make you blameable, but it just won't stick.
And so that's how we behaved among you, as you know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you as a father does his own children.
And so they exhorted them. In other words, basically they spoke the truth, whether it be to comfort, or to instruct, or to admonish, or console, or encourage, or strengthen.
The bottom line to encourage, that word there, exhort, means that they said what needed to be said, even if it was correct, to correct them.
They comforted, that was the main purpose there, to encourage, and they charged.
In other words, they bore witness of the truth.
And this was their example as the authority of a father figure in a house.
A father figure. They had authority to do such.
[37:34] And then the last verse, that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
And of course the verse that came to mind when I read that was, you know, in Romans chapter 12, verses 1 and 2, I beseech you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." And so they were to walk honorable, that they were to be appropriate in their walk.
You know, and I would add also that their walk would make sense to the people that observed them.
That it would be logical, the things that they would do.
And so they were obeying the Lord. They were following the command of Scripture.
And so believers, you know, we are to have that walk that's worthy.
Because there's consequences for the Christians who are caught up with self-interest.
[38:57] Rather than the interest of others.
There's consequences. Because when we genuinely are following the Lord, we're caught up with the interest of others. Even above ourselves.
But if it's all about us and our own self-interest, there's consequences.
[39:17] And I would say, just in general, the biggest consequence is not having the power of the Holy Spirit.
Presence of the Lord in the battle at hand and who wants to to live there and so my prayer for this church is that we would be others minded you know the meaning of agape love others minded and that we follow the example of Jesus Christ and you know also as the remember Paul says you know you followed us you followed our example oh and and God but can you imagine has such a bold testimony that you would say, follow me because I follow Christ.
That's powerful. And then have the confidence that I am approved by God to do what I'm doing.
And then that's what's not forfeited when you have a walk worthy of the Lord. Perfect? Never.
Don't get deceived by that line.
But quickly repent and stay the Amen?
All right, let's stand together. If you need prayer, come on forward, okay, for prayer.
Lord Jesus, we want to thank You for Your Word again.
[40:31] You know, sometimes I imagine like bowling with the safety rails up.
You know, it's a humbling place to live, Lord, in one sense, where we recognize with it, There's no way we're ever going to have a success, Lord, unless we humbly serve You.
Not allowing the pride of man to come across as we've got things together, and we're strong, and we're separate from You, we can carry on.
And no, rather Lord, just to be humble and to look to you and everything and recognize the literal meaning of without you, we can do nothing, you said.
And so help us to live in that place, Lord.
And as your word says, that you resist the proud, but you give grace to the humble.
And so Lord, just help us to live in your grace, in humility, Lord, not in pride.
And so I pray a blessing for your people that all that are here today would just decisively serve you and not compromise and not look to tickle ears, but Lord to please you.
So bless your people I pray in Jesus name, Amen. God bless you.
